Cucamelon (Melothria scabra)
Cucamelon, also known as Mouse Melon or Mexican Sour Gherkin, is a vine grown for its edible fruit. Fruit are about the size of grapes and taste like cucumbers with a tinge of sourness. Our kids adore growing and eating these tasty little treats and the flavor is perfectly refreshing in the summer heat.
Origin: We brought the parent seed of our cucamelons home from a trip to Mexico where we bought the seed at a market in Oaxaca.
(Approximately 30 seeds per packet)
Germination rate: 80% - tested 9/15/24
Planting Instructions: Cucamelon seeds should be planted about 1/4" to 1/2" deep and 6" apart and take about 7 to 14 days to germinate, depending on temperature. Seeds can be slow to germinate unless soil temperature is consistently above 70 F. Cucamelons needs lots of sun and rich soil and can be slow to start but the vines take-off in the heat of summer! Vines can grow to 10 ft. and grow well on a trellis.
