Potiron Écarlate / Scarlet Pumpkin Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum)
The scarlet pumpkin tomato, Potiron Écarlate in French, is a late variety heirloom that produces large fruits weighing around 450 grams but often growing well over 1 lb. The name comes from their color and the ribbed upper section that looks similar to a pumpkin. Their dense, tangy and very fragrant flesh makes them a delight to eat either fresh or as a stuffed tomato. Since the variety has very few seeds, they also make a great sauce or canning tomato.
The Scarlet Pumpkin tomato is one of our favorite varieties to use in mozarella salads and the flavor is truly unique. The plants are very productive but they are a late variety. While they generally don't produce until the second half of July, you will have tons of delicious fruits from the second half of summer until frost. (Indeterminate)
Origin: We were given the parent seed of our Potiron Écarlate tomatoes by a friend who runs a bistro in Lyon, France. They use this variety extensively in their restaurant and insist that the variety originated in Lyon, though there is a bit of controversy over the exact origin!
