Frijol Flor de Junio (Phaseolus vulgaris)
This rare Mexican pole bean hails from Michoacan and is one of the most sought-after varieties in Mexico for their outstanding flavor. The beans are tasty when eaten as a fresh green bean but they are most commonly grown as a dry bean because the color and flavor is rich and unique.Â
Our friends in Oaxaca who gave us the parent seed of Flor de Junio prepare the dry beans simply. Soak the beans over night and then simmer on low heat with salt, onions, a squeeze of lime and a dollop of lard. ( We've made them with our without lard and they're delicious either way!)
Flor de Junio is a pole variety so the plants will need a trellis to climb since the vines grow 6-8ft. The blooms are a pure white color and the green beans are ready to eat about 60-70 days from sowing and the dried beans are ready in 80-100 days. The variety grows well in most any climate and they are more tolerant of heat than other pole bean varieties.
Origin: The parent seed of our Flor de Junio bean was given to us by our friends in Oaxaca. They have a beautiful garden outside of the city and they gave us the original seed of our Zinnia Blanco and Oaxacan Cosmos.Â
