Foxglove Beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis)
This showy perennial is a native to the eastern United States and the tubular white flowers bring tons of pollinators to the garden. Penstemon is often used in wildflower restoration projects because many endangered pollinator species feed on the nectar. The unusual name comes from the fuzzy tongue in each trumpet shaped bloom.Â
Origin: We saved the parent seed of our Foxglove Beardtongue from wild plants in the Shining Rock Wilderness area in Haywood County, NC while hiking near Flat Laurel Creek.Â
(Approximately 100 seeds per packet)
Germination Rate: 75% tested 7/20/25
Planting Instructions:Â Seeds require cold stratification to break dormancy. Either sow directly outdoors in fall or early spring or manually cold stratify by placing seeds on a damp paper towel in a plastic bag in the refigerator for 30 days before sowing. The tiny seeds require light to germinate so simply press a pinch of seeds into the groud every 8" in full sun to part shade. Foxglove Beardtongue ccan also be started in containers and then transplanted in a permanent location in the garden.Â
