Mouchetée de Salasc Lettuce (Lactuca sativa)

A lettuce native to Aveyron, France brought to the Montpellier area by grape harvesters in the 1930s. It acclimatized to the north of the Hérault department where it became a very popular variety and was found at markets throughout the 1900s.

It became an endangered variety with the advent of modern agriculture after the second World War but Martine and Mariano, organic market gardeners in the heart of Hérault, found it in the garden of an old lady, Fernande. The farmers did what they could to revitalize the variety. Mouchetée de Salasc is now sold at local markets in Hérault but it is still a very rare lettuce.

This white-seeded lettuce is renowned for its resistance to cold. It is a crisp lettuce with fantastic buttery flavor. It has elongated, soft green foliage with beautiful red-orange spots.

We are excited to offer this rare lettuce and think you will love it as much as we do. We encourage you to save and share seeds to be sure this special lettuce variety flourishes!

Origin: The parent seed of our Mouchetée de Salasc lettuce was given to us by our friend, author and Master Gardener Valéry Tsimba while visiting her at her home in Paris. Her book, Container Gardening The Permaculture Way, Sustainably Grow Vegetables and More in Your Small Space is available in English on Amazon and it's a fantastic resource for all gardeners.

(Approximately 50 seeds per packet)

Germination Rate: All of our seed varieties exceed 75% germination and are tested every 6 months.

Planting Instructions: Sow seeds in early spring by broadcasting and lightly pressing into the soil (seeds germinate best with light). Lettuce can tolerate light frost and we generally sow our first crop of the year in late February. We also plant a fall crop in September and lettuce grows great in containers. No thinning necessary for baby greens. Full sun to part shade.
