Luffa (Luffa aegyptiaca)
Luffa gourds have very fibrous interiors when fully ripe and can easily be peeled to make a wonderful eco-friendly sponge. Luffas grow on vines up to 20' long and do well on a fence or trellis. As a heat and sun-loving plant, they require 150-200 warm days to fully mature. We sow ours as early as possible in April and cover if frost is still likely. With big yellow blooms on the vine and a fast-growing habit, Luffas are a great plant for kids!
(Approximately 20 seeds per packet)
Planting Instructions: Sow 1 seed 1" deep every 4" in a sunny location 2 to 4 weeks after average last frost, and when soil temperature is above 60°F. Grows well on a fence or trellis.
In cool climates, sow indoors 2 to 4 weeks before average last frost. Luffa roots are sensitive to disturbance so sow into biodegradable pots that can be directly planted in the ground.
