Kapia Sweet Pepper (Capsicum annuum)
This sweet red pepper is a staple in Hungary for making sweet paprika powder and it's a exceptional fresh-eating pepper too. The peppers are generally 4-6" long, horn-shaped and have thick walls. The flavor is very sweet with hints of smoke, minerals and apricot. The plants produce abundant fruits and grow to about 30" tall so it's a good idea to provide a stake for support.Â
The exact origin of Kapia peppers is debated with Hungarians, Romanians and Turks all claiming the variety as their own. There is no debate however that Kapia peppers have outstanding flavor and exceptional production.Â
Origin:Â The parent seed of our Kapia peppers came from the garden of friends who have a house at Lake Balaton. Balaton is located in the Transdanubia region of Eastern Hungary and is the largest lake in central Europe measuring 230 sq miles in area. The region around Lake Balaton has very fertile soil and the region is known for excellent vineyards and pepper production.Â
(Approximately 20 seeds per packet)Â
Germination Rate:Â All of our seed varieties exceed 80% germination and are re-tested every 6 months.
Planting Instructions: We recommend starting peppers indoors in a sunny and warm location 4-6 weeks before last frost in spring. Plant outdoors in full sun after danger of frost in spring. Note: pepper seeds need soil temperatures to be at least 70 F to germinate and we use a heating pad under the seedling tray to maintain temperature.
