Danube Sausage Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum)

A Hungarian heirloom variety. This uniquely shaped tomato is a prolific producer and the fruits are often used for pastes and sauces because of the rich flavor and because the fruits have very few seeds. We like to eat them fresh in salads and they have a smoky, sweet flavor. The plants are robust and the 4-6" fruits generally grow in clusters of 4-6. (Indeterminate)

Origin: In our family, the Hungarian city of Esztergom, on the banks of the Danube River, is important because Papa's great grandfather lived there while he was training to be an artist. Esztergom was the capital of Hungary from the 10th-13th century and Slovakia is just across the river. The parent seed of our Danube Sausage Tomato came from a friend who lives near Esztergom. She gave us the seeds years ago when we were visiting the lovely city. Her grandmother gave her the original seeds which had been grown and saved in their family for generations. According to their family tradition, only Danube Sausage Tomatoes may be used in the preparation of goulash!

(Approximately 15 seeds per packet)

Germination rate: 95% - tested 10/17/24

Planting Instructions: we recommend starting tomato seeds indoors in a bright and warm location 4 to 6 weeks before last frost date in spring. Transplant after danger of frost in full sun and trellis.
