Potager de Vilvoorde Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum)

A heirloom variety originating in Belgium. Developed in 1930 at the Vilvoorde horticultural school in the suburbs of Brussels, it is named after the gardener who in 1848 was the first to grow a tomato in a greenhouse in Belgium.

This is a variety well-suited to short and cool growing season but does well in warm climates too. Here in our garden in zone 7b the Vilvoorde is one of the earliest tomatoes to produce. The fruits are generally 50 to 100 grams and are generally golf ball to tennis ball sized. The flesh is juicy and sweet with fruity flavors. Medium to low acid. (Indeterminate)

Origin: We recieved the the parent seed of our Potager de Vilvoorde from a Belgian friend who attended a program at the horticulture school of Vilvoorde.

Germination Rate: 90% tested 7/23/25

Planting Instructions: We recommend starting tomato seeds indoors in a bright and warm location 4 to 6 weeks before last frost date in spring. Transplant after danger of frost in full sun and trellis.
