Red Trash Panda Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum)
This new tomato variety will be one that is grown and cherished for many generations and is bound to become one of the most widely grown and adored heirlooms. The Red Trash Panda Tomato is truly a phoenix that rose from the ashes, those ashes being the burn pile of our friend Brooke at Shorty's Funny Farm in Indiana. Here's the story.
Many years ago, Brooke noticed a robust and persistent tomato plant growing from the burn pile on her farm. As a Master Gardener with an eye for strong plants and the compassionate heart of a woman who roots for the underdog, Brooke let the tomato grow. Once fruits began to form, she could tell that this was no oridinary tomato because the fruits quickly became massive. Once they began to ripen, the tomatoes exhibited the unique characteristic of green to black shoulders and a dark red blossom end.
When the first tomato was ready to harvest, Brooke quickly knew she had an exceptional variety because the flavor was outstanding with a strong sweetness and a hint of smoke. The Red Trash Panda seems to grow pre-salted because there is a hint of sodium as the flavor settles on the palate and there are few tomatoes that are as juicy with a perfect porportion of seed to flesh.
Brooke grew the Red Trash Panda for years after first discovering the original plant in her burn pile and the variety shows remarkable stability generations after first being discovered. The plants are indeterminate, regular-leafed and the fruits are routinely over 1 lb. This is one tomato that you do not want to go another season without growing and enjoying!
Origin: Brooke is an old friend and customer of ours. In fact, she was one of the first customers to ever place an order with Kids Seed Co. We are truly honored that Brooke selected us to be the first seed company to carry Red Trash Panda seeds. We are equally delighted and grateful that her keen eye and skill in the garden brought Red Trash Panda into the world because from first taste it has become our favorite tomato. (We also LOVE the whimsical name!)
