Verde de las Landas Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum)
A fantastic and rare GWR (Green when ripe) tomato. A vigorous regular-leaf variety that produces medium to large 8-16 oz. fruits that ripen when green with a little yellow/amber/gold color on their shoulders.
The flavor of Verde de las Landas is what sets this variety apart. The fruits offer an exceptional balance of sweetness and brightness, with complex fruity notes that many growers compare to tropical fruit, melon, or citrus. The low acidity and smooth texture create a rich, refreshing eating experience. (Indeterminate)
As with many rare heirloom varieties, there is a bit of disagreement of where this variety originated. Some claim it hails from Cantabria in Northern Spain while others say the variety originated in the Landes region of Southwestern France. The two regions of origin in question are only separated by a hundred miles or so on the curve between Spain and France on the Bay of Biscay so it's likely that the variety has been grown in both areas for quite some time.Â
If you have never grown a Green-when-ripe tomato, this is an outstanding first variety to try because the flavor is truly exceptional and the fruits are beautiful.Â
Origin:Â The parent seed of our Verde de las Landas Tomatoes was given to us by friends who live and garden in Bayonne, France. Of course they claim French origin for the variety!
